Self Love – Love Yourself First

self love self careWith many people the idea to love themselves is foreign. We are programmed to give love to others, but to some it seems almost sacrilegious to love ourselves. Some of us think we are being selfish when we put ourselves first. We give and give until often there is nothing left. As we recover from the exhaustion we realize taking care of ourselves or practicing self-love is not only practical but necessary before you have anything to give to others.
When you love yourself, you allow time for joy filled pleasures like a quiet cup of coffee or a leisurely lunch with friends or whatever feeds your soul. You begin to nourish yourself with good food instead of always taking the burnt toast. You protect your time and yourself from the people who drain your precious energy. You learn to say, “No.”
Loving yourself also means forgiving yourself for everything, even something you feel is unforgivable. God forgives you and you were doing the best you could at the time. Forgiving yourself is one of the most loving things you can do for you. Love is not just for us to give, it is also for us to receive. For years I thought that if I just loved my Dad and my two husbands enough, they would stop drinking and I would be happy. But when I finally realized it was ME I needed to love and respect, I found happiness no matter what they did.
