The Building Blocks of Poverty

The Building Blocks of Poverty

poverty mentalityWhen I was in real estate my manager instructed us newbies to make a “sphere book.” This notebook included the names, addresses and phone numbers of my “sphere of influence” – a list of people to call about my move to the real estate business.

An agent being trained with me spent hours making her book. It had colored sections named: Family, Friend, Past Co-worker, High School, Church, etc. to tell where she knew them from. Even their names were color coded according to the years she had known them. The front of her notebook glistened with smiley face stickers and glitter letters saying, “My Sphere.” It was a masterpiece.

She was still working on her book while I had called everyone in my sphere and had a listing appointment and new buyer. She may still be working on her book. This is just one example of how we use perfection to avoid doing the things that can make us money.

Perfectionism and Procrastination are the building blocks of poverty. Perfectionists live in a world of “shoulds.” They talk a lot about how the world “should be.” They are dissatisfied with their past and pessimistic about their future.

While procrastinators are their own worst enemy they make life a constant struggle. Obsessed with perfection they continually feel guilty for not measuring up. They have difficulty making decisions because they are looking for a perfect result. They don’t take advantage of opportunities because they insist on guarantees. Sadly, our world doesn’t work that way.

Perfectionism and procrastination are both just mental habits that rob us of our motivation. Perfectionism paralyzes our ability to make decisions and commit to a project. And procrastination paralyzes our ability to take action. There is no action until everything is perfect.

When we fear the future we procrastinate and that only magnifies our fear. I put off writing for years. All it did was zap my energy. I found it takes more energy to continually avoid something than it does to actually do it. Get started today. Action cures fear.
