I’m not sure it’s possible to grow up in Ohio and not be a sports fan. This is a place where there are more dogs, cats and hamsters named “Buckeye” than there are leaves in the trees. Time stops every Saturday afternoon in the fall as the glorious Gray and Scarlet Ohio State team enters the field.
There is the excitement of screaming like a Banshee with the crowd, feeling that you are part of something bigger than yourself. And the stories of the players overcoming limitations and horrendous childhoods to make the team are inspiring. Sports become part of your DNA when you live in Ohio.
So I understand why Ohio is thrilled that LeBron James is coming back to play for the Cavaliers. He devastated the whole state by moving to Miami with an overwhelming display of fanfare to play for the Heat. I was upset about it also and I don’t even live in Ohio anymore. It seemed LeBron was swayed by the money and fame instead of playing for the “home team.” We felt abandoned.
But now he is back to where he began, giving back and possibly making amends. It reminds me of the 8th step in Al-Anon which is, “Make a list of all persons you have harmed and become willing to make amends to them.”
Is there someone you need to make amends to? Is there someone you need to forgive? Maybe you need to forgive yourself. Everything is forgivable in the eyes of God. It’s never too late.
